Video Game Review
Let me preface this by stating that my wife & I are somewhat liberal when it comes to our kids' entertainment- they're not allowed to watch horror flicks, but an hour or so of Super Mario every other day is totally acceptable to us.
So, last week we had their cousins over for a slumber party (all kids are 8 or younger) & I thought it would be a great idea to rent a new video game. Even better I found out that the library rents out Wii games (free). So being my frugal self, I took the boys to view their very limited selection & we all agreed (sort-of) on a game called "Science Papa" that features "over 30 different experiments," during which players will manipulate lab equipment like Bunsen burners, mix chemicals, etc. Sounds innocent- right? From the library & age appropriate.
First off, the kids were not really impressed with this pick & I could tell- but wished for the best, hoping this could be educational & fun, a nice change of pace from Super Smash Bros, etc. I was wrong, very wrong. This was the weirdest game ever. We only got ten minutes into the game before I shut it off. I set it up for 2 player action, where each player competes to see who can complete their experiment the fastest. This first experiment was... building a goddamn bomb! Seriously!? It had a timer, explosives, etc. built in a lab setting. WTF? Why? I was expecting maybe... they would make soda-pop, or a candle. Maybe even invent Flubber- but constructing a bomb was so odd & made no sense to me. Science Papa wants to teach your kid to blow stuff up. Am I too conservative?

Got Globe?
I need to buy one of these...bad. Should stand about waist or knee high. No luck on Craigslist or Ebay. Anybody have one they want to sell- or seen one in a store recently?
Special effects that you can't believe were "real".
Entertaining article that explains 8 movie effects created without using CGI, including the scene in Dark Knignt: "The flipping of the semi was accomplished with a technique known in Hollywood as flipping a real goddamned semi".

Movie Review
This was interesting- not too exciting, but informative. You may require some ties to the graphic design world in order to fully appreciate. It's insane how often this font is used. Basically I think it was born as an awesome alternative to crappy fonts that dominated in the 50's & 60's, kind of like how the grunge movement saved us all from hair bands.
One of the themes is- you either love or hate Helvetica- didn't realize it, but I'm a hater. I've designed thousands of logos and never use Helvetica, and challenge anyone to find even a scrap of Helvetica in my portfolio here.

Beer Review
Taking my friend The Hopostle's advice, I chose to celebrate my new logo last week with the world's 10th best beer- Founder's Kentucky Breakfast Stout. If you're a beer lover, specifically a stout lover, this is a must-try, must-splurge type of beer. I've never gotten too far into appreciating the "complexity" of any beer- but this stout has it all: chocolate, malt, coffee, caramel, milk, etc. all come to mind. at 12% alcohol content, one should perceive this as almost a fine liquor - to be relished.
Here's the kick (and the reason my wife might disown me once she reads this): this stuff is $18.99 a 4 pack! I'm still in debate if it was worth it. The cashier even shaved $2.00 off the pricetag- out of pity. Don't get me wrong, it's delicious- a true treat. You only live once, right? Plus the deciding factor was the fact that we have all spent $5+ for a beer at a bar, right? Read a better review here.
